São Paulo striker Alexandre Pato was diagnosed this Monday with a torn rectus femoris muscle in his left leg. The 34-year-old player felt sore during the training session of the film of the week and the injury was confirmed after the examination of the image. He already works on recovery at Reffis, the club’s medical department, but is at risk of no longer playing for the team.

Pato has a contract only until the 31st of December 2023 and there are no technical commission plans for the next season. The club wants to decrease the number of athletes in the list commanded by Dorival Junior, currently with almost 40 players. São Paulo announced the return of Alexandre Pato in May, weeks after the player began using the Barra Funda CT to recover from a serious injury to his left knee, suffered while playing for Orlando City (USA). At the time, he signed a contract with productivity clauses, with the possibility of renewal. Since then, there have been only ten games, almost always commencing between the reserves, and only two goals scored.

The last time Alexandre Pato entered the camp was on September 20, after a 2 to 1 defeat by Fortaleza, or Morumbi, in the 24th round of the Campeonato Brasileiro. After the occasion, the São Paulo tricolor entered the field with the reserve team, sparing the starters for the Copa do Brasil final against Flamengo, and the striker played ten minutes after coming off the bench.

The striker played for the São Paulo club for the first time between 2014 and 2015, on loan from rival Corinthians, before moving to Chelsea. After defending Villarreal and Tianjin Tianhai, from China, he returned to the tricolor team in 2019. The second stint ended in August 2020, with contract termination after wear and tear between the player and management.
