THE INAUGURAL day of the Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1, spanning 11.1 kilometres from Belapur to Pendhar, quietly commenced its commercial operations on November 17 from 3 pm onwards, foregoing any official ceremonies. Within five hours of service on its debut day, the line, managed by MahaMetro, saw a robust ridership exceeding 5,000 commuters until 8 pm. The last trip is till 10pm.
Rajesh Patil, Joint Managing Director of CIDCO commented, “Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 from Belapur to Pendhar started today with great response and enthusiasm from people. It will go a long way in fulfilling the dreams of the people in the city.”

Aditi Padayar, a 25-year-old who piloted the inaugural service from Belapur to Pendhar, transitioned from her previous role as a Mumbai Monorail train captain to join the Navi Mumbai Metro. She shared her smooth experience driving the Metro on its maiden journey, noting the delight of numerous passengers who chose to partake in this inaugural ride.
The Navi Mumbai Metro’s initial operations on its first day extended from four stations: Kendriya Vihar, Central Park, Belapur, and Pendhar.
Employing a total of 20 drivers, including three women, the Metro’s services will be facilitated from 6am to 10pm from now on.
During the launch day, three female drivers and one male commenced services from different stations at 3 pm. Among them, Ankita Naik initiated operations from Kendriya Vihar, while Aditi Padayar piloted the Metro from Belapur, coinciding with the simultaneous flag-off from all four stations.
These drivers underwent a comprehensive four-weeks training programme supervised by experts from Pune and Nagpur metros. Each driver on the Navi Mumbai Metro is responsible for eight trips, said the MahaMetro official.
MahaMetro, operating the Navi Mumbai Metro line as appointed by CIDCO, has demonstrated successful management of Metro services in Pune and Nagpur.

Aditi Padayar and Ankita Naik, both previously associated with Mumbai’s transportation system, shared their experiences transitioning to the Navi Mumbai Metro, emphasising the smooth operation and adherence to automated train protection systems controlled from the Operation Control Centre in Taloja.
The train was operated at 60-65kmph speed, as per CIDCO, although the testing speed of Navi Mumbai Metro is 90 kmph. The distance of 11.1 km stretch from Belapur to Pendhar comprising 11 stations takes nearly 30 minutes to cross. Currently, there are eight rakes to provide service at a time gap of every 15 minutes on this elevated Metro corridor.
The Navi Mumbai Metro fare is in the range of Rs 10 to Rs 40 depending on the distance travelled by commuters.
